A desktop environment (DE) is a group of programs that are used to display information and allow the user to interact with the computer, often using a GUI or TUI. A desktop environment typically consists of icons, windows, toolbars, folders, wallpapers and desktop widgets.

Desktop Environment	Description
Budgie	The Budgie Desktop is a modern desktop environment based on GNOME designed to keep out the way of the user. Budgie is written in Vala.
Cinnamon	Cinnamon is a Desktop Environment based on GNOME and developed by the Linux Mint team and written in JavaScript.
Enlightenment	Enlightenment is a desktop environment and window manager for Linux and other Unix-Based Operating Systems written in C and ELF.
GNOME	GNOME is a popular desktop environment and is the default desktop environment for a large number of operating systems. GNOME is written in many different languages.
MATE	MATE is a lightweight desktop environment continuation of GNOME 2 and is coded in Python and C++.
Plasma	KDE Plasma is a highly customizable and popular and is coded in C++ and QML.
Trinity Desktop Environment	Trinity Desktop Environment is an desktop environment forked from KDE 3 coded in C.
XFCE	XFCE is a lightweight desktop environment aiming to be fast for weaker hardware while still remaining user friendly. Coded in C.
LXQt	LXQt is a desktop environment built on Qt which derives from Razor-qt and LXDE components which were ported to Qt.
