History
May 2024
The initial plans were made for starting the wiki in the Discord Server, Mediawiki was chosen as the software for being the most extensible and powerful of the choices available. Discussions were held on what the goals of the wiki should be and what content should be included on the wiki.
June 2024
We obtained the domain atl.wiki and set up the server for the wiki! Accounts began as invite only for trusted members of the All Things Linux discord. Electron271, Green and Scott96 were chosen the initial team behind running and maintaining the wiki, led by the Owner of ATL, Kaizen.
We set up a dedicated section of our discord to run the wiki from and had just 10 editors starting work on the wiki, we also set up a variety of themes and choose Citizen as our default theme due to its modern feel compared to the default skins.
After suffering some DDoS attacks, we officially launched the wiki! We then hit 250 edits, our first significant milestone, and had almost 25 pages! We opened up registration further to most members within All Things Linux on an open request basis.
October 2024
After a few quiet months of slow growth, Atmois was recruited to help administrate and manage the wiki. With some amazing help from a system-administrator at Weird Gloop (The hosts of the Minecraft and Runescape wiki's) we planned the next steps for the wiki.
We opened registration to all users and implemented some started work on our guidelines and policies! We had a small wave of spambots which we quickly resolved by implementing Cloudflare Turnstile on signup, which entirely removed the issue. As we had low moderation capabilities, we enabled ApprovedRevs across the whole wiki and granted all existing editors approving permissions as a thank you for their work.
We reworked our main page to remove the dynamic list of all pages as we neared almost 75 pages with almost 1000 edits, we also reimplemented drafts and cleaned up our automated systems on the wiki to prepare for some large scale internal changes.
November 2024
We migrated from ApprovedRevs to Moderation to reduce the complexity of the system for page reviews and upgraded to Mediawiki 1.42.3 as well as cleaning up our backend from a messed up install. We also added some nice extensions for logged-in users, such as favourites and TOTP 2FA.
After some internal discussion, we decided to ask our community what they thought of our usage of the CC BY licence for the wiki content. After a short vote, it was decided to relicence the content to CC BY-NC-SA. We also required email confirmation for all users to combat spam on the wiki.
To end up the month, Atmois was assigned to lead the wiki project. Their primary assignment was to prepare the wiki for a proper release and get it up to scratch with the best practises and learn the ins and outs of Mediawiki to most effectively use it, the next month consisted of a lot of planning and internal reworks.
January 2025
In the new year, we started planning our proper full release of the wiki, titled internally as "1.0". We started off with setting up SSO for our staff team and worked on resolving some long-standing bugs. We also changed our update policy to LTS updates only with an update to Mediawiki 1.43 and worked with editors to make the wiki a better experience for users and editors alike.
February 2025
We entirely reworked our internal systems in order to allow easier long-term maintenance, as well as working on some issues with our skins. We also started work on templates and cleaning up loose ends on content ready for 1.0 to make the cleanest experience possible for users.
Shortly after we then ran another relicencing effort as we realised in retrospect the original decision was poorly made and rushed, however we rectified it through a formal discussion and form to comply with the licence and to allow the maximum freedom of the content on the wiki whilst protecting our editors. We now are fully licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are confident in this decision as the best for both editors and readers alike.
To end the month, we removed Moderation to re-add ApprovedRevs only on our, at the time planned, Guides section of the wiki. This was done as we were confident on our ability to combat misinformation and spam effectively with our growing user base. We also resolved the issues with our skins and began work on most of our policies and essential documentation.
April 2025
The month started with an enormous overhaul to the entire setup, we reinstalled Mediawiki, separated the database to its own, more secure and resilient server, planned cleaner updates and setup following the best practises for Mediawiki. We now had a more long-term ready and maintainable setup ready for 1.0, we also set up Short URL properly to have our pages on the root and properly setup SEO and finalised most of our policies to be up to scratch.
We had our official launch of Guides with already a small group of editors dedicated to writing them out of the box and wrote some new policies for it as well as finalise the goals for 1.0. Furthermore, we had some amazing support from the community in brainstorming what we could do to make the wiki an amazing resource for all users of all ability levels and established our key values of the wiki, Accuracy, Impartiality, Consistency, Courtesy and Accessibility.
To end an already booming month, we had a mention on Brodie Robertson's channel[1] bring an amazing influx of new editors from all backgrounds to the wiki to help make the content even better.
August 2025
In the past few months went silent as we did a lot of changes to improve the wiki. Starting by restructuring our internal systems to allow for a staging wiki to be setup to avoid testing Mediawiki Configuration changes on the live wiki, migrating to NGINX for faster and simpler performance, refined our Privacy Policy to be more transparent about our systems, expanded our guidelines, redesigned our home page from scratch and so much more that make every little bit of the wiki a better experience for both editors and users.
With 1.0 we...
