Ubuntu is a highly popular Linux distribution derived from Debian and developed by Canonical for the commercial market. The first version of Ubuntu was released on the October 20, 2004. Canonical profits from this distribution by providing 24/7 technical support to business costumers and extended long-term support for Ubuntu.[1]
An interim release of Ubuntu is published every six months, with long-term support releases every two years. Canonical provides security updates and support for each release until the release reaches its end-of-life date. The LTS version receives 5 years of free updates or up to 10 years with Ubuntu Pro. The interim releases of Ubuntu receive 9 months of support.[2]
Ubuntu can be run locally, on a cloud, or in a VM. Ubuntu comes packaged with basic GNOME utilities as default and additionally from Ubuntu Software (formally Ubuntu Software Centre) and from APT, Ubuntu's default package manager.
