Unix is a family of multitasking, multi-user computer operating systems that derive from the original AT&T Unix, whose development started in 1969. Unix is recognised as the first portable operating system. Today UNIX isn't an operating system but rather a family of UNIX certified operating systems all following the Single UNIX Specification.
The owner of the UNIX® trademark has been The Open Group since 1994.[1]
Examples of modern UNIX operating systems include Apple's MacOS and IBM AIX.
Being genetic UNIX® is not required for UNIX® certification. Formerly, Inspur K-UX was certified UNIX®, specifically versions 2.0 and 3.0. Inspur K-UX's UNIX® certification expired in February of 2019 and has yet to be renewed.[2]
