Proprietary software is a type of non-free software, usually owned by a company or an organization, which forbids the user from viewing, modifying, or redistributing it and it's source code.
Linux and other open source operating systems will avoid or not support proprietary software when possible. This is mainly due to incompatible licensing.[1]
Some examples of proprietary software are Microsoft Windows and Adobe Photoshop.
