Openbox 3.4.10 with default configuration and theme.

Openbox is a highly configurable window manager for the X11 windowing system that is forked of the Blackbox window manager. Openbox was created by Mikael Magnusson and is now being maintained by Dana Jansens. It focuses on providing a traditional window management experience that could be compared to the window management of Microsoft Windows.[1] Openbox runs on many Unix-Like operating systems including Linux and the many flavors of BSD.

Features

Openbox is very minimal by design, but can easily be expanded via other applications such as a panel and system utilities. It has two main components to make it function, those being:

  • Openbox window manager: Manages the placement of windows on the screen, provides window decorations and manages workspaces or virtual desktops.
  • ObConf: A configuration tool for Openbox which allows you to modify many things about Openbox graphically such as the theme, window management behavior, and workspaces.[2]

Usage

While Openbox is perfectly usable on its own, many desktops environments use Openbox as their window manager of choice due to its lack of dependencies, including LXQt and LXDE.[3] Openbox is also used in many lightweight Linux distributions including SliTaz Linux and CrunchBang Linux.[4][5]
