OpenIndiana is a Unix-like operating system based on the Illumos kernel.[2] Announced on September 14, 2010, at a time of uncertainty after Oracle bought OpenSolaris.[3] It was proved timely as Oracle shut down development of OpenSolaris.[4]
OpenIndiana uses the same tooling as Solaris; the SMF init system,[5] FMA fault management system,[6] and IPS package manager,[7] The majority of the Solaris documentation also applies to OpenIndiana.[citation needed]
OpenIndiana makes use of the SunOS branch of the UNIX kernel,[8] and thus provides all of the stability benefits of a UNIX System V derivative.[citation needed] This does, however, mean that hardware support is limited in comparison to a BSD or Linux based OS.[9]
OpenIndiana uses the SunOS libc, which severely limits what software will compile on it successfully. SunOS libc only implements functions expected by POSIX and ANSI C.[citation needed]
